Anas ibn Malik was one of the younger companions from the tribe of Bani an-Najjar. He was from Madina from the Khazraj tribe. Anas’ mother and brother were very strong in Islam. His mother was Umm Sulaym bint Milhan. Umm Sulaym was one of the first women to embrace Islam in Madina. Anas ibn Malik’s brother Bara’ ibn Malik was known to be a fierce warrior and fighter in Islam. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madina, Umm Sulaym presented her son as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to be his servant. He was ten years old as the time, and served the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for ten more years until the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Anas’ greatest title was the servant of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made dua for Anas that he have abundance in wealth and offspring, and a long life. He had 120 in offspring and lived to 93 a.h. He was the last of the companions to live in Basra.
