There was an entire month when he did not have any food fit for human consumption except for what Bilal (Allah be pleased with him) brought hidden under his armpit.

The second hadith exemplifies the time when the companions complained of hunger and showed the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) stones tied to their stomachs and they found out that he had two stones tied to his stomach from the intensity of hunger. The third hadith is about the lack of provisions that the companions had and the blessing that was given in their little provision.

The fourth hadith commands us to love the downtrodden and connect family ties. It encourages us to speak the truth; rely on Allah alone; and not fear the blame of anyone when we are in the path of Allah. It also directs us to words that are a treasure from beneath the Divine Throne.

The first hadith demonstrates the lack of luxury in the life of our beloved Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). He used to sleep on a mat of woven fiber used to leave marks on his blessed body. His pillow was rough leather stuffed with palm fibers.

The second hadith shows the insufficient provisions of the Companions of the Platform (Ashab al Suffa). They did not even have enough clothing to cover their entire body.

In the third and fourth hadiths, we are given the advice to look at those below us in financial status and worldly blessings and not at those above us so that we do not belittle Allah’s favor upon us. This prevents envy from entering our hearts and inculcates gratitude. A complete believer compares himself to someone better than him in religion and someone less than him in worldly matters.

In the fourth hadith, the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) again warns us concerning the dangers of wealth, but he adds a key point; wealth often leads to competition and greater evils. The fifth hadith highlights how styles of wealth consumption allow us to thank Allah for all His blessings. Indeed, the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) was given the gift of true eloquence, characterized by the brevity of speech in combination with a multitude of meanings.
