It’s human nature to want to engage in matters we think are good for us. Often, however, we later find that it is quite the opposite. This phenomenon is highlighted in verse 216, where Allah Most High makes it obligatory for the believers to fight (in war). Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat explains that while fighting in the way of Allah Most High may entail the loss of life and property, Allah Most High assures the believers that it is indeed a gain – something they’ll only realize later. In the next verse, Allah Most High forbids fighting in the four sacred months – Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qa’dah, and Dhul Hijjah. These verses primarily contain the injunctions of killing and fighting the disbelievers. Verse 191 commands the Muslims to fight the disbelievers who had expelled them from their home, Mecca, drive them out, and kill them wherever they are. Shaykh Abdul-Rahim explains that it is crucial to understand the context in which these verses were revealed and not to read them in isolation. He explains why ‘fitna’ (a difficulty / a crushing tribulation or trial that pushes someone to their limit) is considered a more severe crime than killing. Verse 194 explains the injunctions of fighting during the four sacred months – Dhu al-Qadah, Dhu’l-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab.

Shaykh Abdul-Rahim explains the meanings of ‘baatil’ (that which is wrong / something that is perishing) and how it applies in this context. He illustrates the gravity of the sin of willingly taking another’s wealth through bribery with a beautiful hadith of prophet Muhamad (peace and blessings be upon him). In verse 189, the believers are told that the waxing and waning of the moon have nothing to do with superstition, but it is a means to fix mark fixed periods – particularly hajj. This section ends with the command to fight, within prescribed limits, those in the way of Allah.

In this episode of Seekers Complete Qur’an Tafsir, Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat continues his commentary of Sura al-Baqara; Chapter 2: 21-24. The first command and prohibition in the Qur’an come in these verses. The command came to worship your Lord with the hope of attaining the station of taqwa. Allah Most High gives reasons for this worship and forbids the association of partners with Him. In verse 23, Allah challenges those who doubt the Qur’an to bring even one sura like the Qur’an. No one was able to do this. Allah Most High then warns them, in verse 24, of a fire whose fuel is men and stones is prepared for the disbelievers.

In its introduction, he highlights some of its virtues, particularly those related to reciting it regularly, and discusses some of its main themes from among which are: it provides the details of guidance after the generalization mentioned in Sura al-Fatiha, it explains what the “Straight Way” (Qur’an 1:6) is, and it talks about the human being as a representative of Allah Most High on earth characterized in the story of Prophet Adam (peace be upon him).

In the commentary, he outlines the qualities of the people of Taqwa (God-consciousness)—those who are truly guided by Allah Most High, unshakable in belief, and rooted in guidance—the people of success. In doing so, he discusses the nature of the connection between the true believer and Allah Most High as well as the believer’s connection with the creation.
