The Heart Has Six States – Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
Shaykh Faraz Rabbani explains the words of Abu Bakr al-Warraq, one of the great early Muslims, who said that “The heart has six states: (1) life or (2) death; (3) health or (4) sickness; (5) wakefulness or (6) sleep. “Its life is guidance, and its death is misguidance. “Its health is purity and limpidity, and its sickness is being roiled up and attached. “Its wakefulness is remembrance, and its sleep is heedlessness. “Each of these has a sign: (1) The sign of life is avid news and awe and acting accordingly. (2) The sign of death is the opposite. (3) The sign of health is experiencing [spiritual meanings]. (4) The sign of sickness is the opposite. (5) The sign of wakefulness is hearing and seeing [spiritually, from Allah]. (6) The sign of sleep is the opposite.” For more SeekersGuidance podcasts, visit https://seekersguidance.org/podcasts/. Avoid Three Things, Then Do What You Wish – Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
Shaykh Faraz Rabbani explains a counsel of Shah Ibn Shuja al-Kirmani, a great righteous scholar of the early Muslims, who would tell his students, “Avoid lying, cheating, and backbiting—and then do what you wish.” [Qushayri, Risala] These are “foundational vices,” as Imam Arusi explains. Shaykh Faraz explains why each is fundamentally against Prophetic teachings—and how their opposites are the essence of the sunna: (1) Being truthful (sidq); (2) Being trustworthy (amana); and (3) Saying good about others. The Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) said, “There is no faith in one who can’t be trusted, and there is no religion in one who doesn’t fulfill their commitments.” [Ahmad, and others] The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should say the good or remain silent.” [Bukhari and Muslim] For more SeekersGuidance podcast shows, visit https://seekersguidance.org/podcasts/. Are you too busy to worship God- Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
We may feel that work, studies, family, parents, and all the things we need to do, are unduly stealing our time and we are too busy to worship God. In this week's Friday Reminder, Shaykh Faraz beautifully shows us how this is simply not true and that Islam encompasses rewards, and honors all of these endeavors. It is simply about what resides in the heart - our intentions. There is profound power in our intentions to transform everything we do into a means of traveling closer to God. Shaykh Faraz counsels us that there are three core intentions of the Muslim. One of them is to fulfill a communal obligation. Your work, whatever it is, is helping people and helping society. Whether you sweep the roads, take the calls, see the patients, teach the students or stack the shelves. You are directly or indirectly fulfilling a human need. So consider that and intend what you do for God. When you leave your home to travel to work... don’t! Leave your home to travel to God. Watch the reminder to find out what the other two intentions are, so you too can transform the mere mundane into the super sacred and feel a deep peace and joy that you are always traveling to God in all that you do. Gratitude is the Best Attitude- Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
We are often blind to the blessings that God rains down upon us in our daily lives. And so we wrongly attribute our talents and blessings to our own efforts and blame our hardships on the failures and shortcomings of others. This leads the human being into a state of complaint (shakwa). And for the one who complains much, God will give them much more to complain about. As for the one who recognizes who they really are, they see everything as a freely given gift by God and so enter into a state of complete gratitude (shukr). And for the one that is grateful, God will them much more to be grateful for. “If you show gratitude, I will increase you” (Quran 14:7). In this week’s Friday Reminder, Shaykh Yusuf Weltch discusses the importance of being in a permanent and active state of gratitude and how we can all learn to arrive at such a state through deep and honest reflection upon our blessings. It is Allah alone who we worship and it is Allah alone who we ask for help. The one constant throughout our lives is The One who is constantly in existence. The Everlasting, Allah. But wait, do you want to know a secret? All these mundane acts we carry out without a second thought can be turned into sacred acts! Profitable with God both here and hereafter. Intentions. Remember God. Before every action and in all our states, remember you are doing this all for God. That is the secret of the ‘Bismillah’. Seek His pleasure, His acceptance, and His reward. Make Him your forethought, your midthought, and your afterthought. Do it all for His sake. And you will reap endless rewards. The Parable of the Good Tree: Tafsir of Quran 14:24-27 – Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
Shaykh Faraz Rabbani looks at a classical commentary on verses 24-27 of Sura Ibrahim. He explains different opinions on which is the "good word" and the "good tree" and how the metaphor relates to the believer. He also offers basic advice on how to improve one's connection to the Quran's meanings. The verses are: "Do you not see how God makes comparisons? A good word is like a good tree whose root is firm and whose branches are high in the sky, yielding constant fruit by its Lord’s leave--God makes such comparisons for people so that they may reflect--but an evil word is like a rotten tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, with no power to endure. God will give firmness to those who believe in the firmly rooted word, both in this world and the Hereafter, but the evildoers He leaves to stray: God does whatever He will." Nurturing the Tree of Faith & Institution Building – Shaykh Yahya Rhodus
Shaykh Yahya Rhodus shares his viewpoint that in this phase of North American Islam, the most important priority is institution-building and conveying the Prophetic inheritance. He reflects on the idea of the Tree of Faith as a metaphor for institution building. Beginning with the seed of faith, he draws links between nurturing the soil of the heart and modern destructive overfarming practices that produce dead soil. Shaykh Yahya talks about nurturing our hearts, and how, just as trees don’t bear fruit overnight, nor do institutions: the results of one's service might not appear for generations. Living Faith Fully – Meanings, Gratitude, Certitude, and Tests and Blessings- Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
Shaykh Faraz Rabbani shares four keys to “Living Faith Fully.” He explains the journey of life as being a journeying from (a) merely living; to (b) having faith; to (c) living this faithfully. For this, he advises that: One. Strive to live the meanings of the religion and its rituals—not just its forms. “Mean it, then say it,” he advises. Two. Cultivate Gratitude. Gratitude is a key to living faithfully. It entails (a) seeing—with faith—everything as a blessing from Allah; then (b) appreciating these blessings, through active reflection; and then (c) expressing this appreciation Three. Cultivate Contentment. If we realize that the greatest blessings and gifts are those we already have—namely: (a) existence; (b) live; (c) faith; and (d) guidance Four. Recognize Tests as Blessings. If we understand these realities, we should realize that all of life—its good and bad, the ease and the distress—are all tests. Illustrating that one should not be shy of seeking knowledge at any age, he starts with the story of one of his teachers, Shaykh Adib Kallas, insisting to sit at the back of a high-level class by a peer whom he considered more advanced. He relates that two distinguished scholars were invited to a wedding at the same time as this class, and requested Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razzaq al-Halabi, whose class it was, for permission to skip the class to attend. Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razzaq refused, and the scholars complied with his order. Shaykh Faraz also tells how he went once went to Shaykh Adib Kallas' house to find the usual students absent. He read extra, but as he left, noticed an obituary notice at the door: Shaykh Adib's brother had passed away the previous night, but he hadn't canceled his classes. In fact, he contacted the scholars of Damascus to request that they not cancel their classes to attend his brother's funeral: knowledge takes precedence. And he shares insights on how to focus our consciousness to acquire and cultivate true hope and awe--by letting go of attachments to the past and to distracting or useless things--so we can attain the Eternal Pleasure of Allah and His Paradise: "And as for the one who is not in awe of the station of their Caring Lord and who restrains their lower self from its wayward ways, then Paradise is indeed their resting place." Pre Khutba Talk: Activism and Gender Based Violence -Shaykh Sadullah Khan
In this Pre Khutba talk, Shaykh Sadullah discusses the tragic and deplorable rise of gender-based violence in South Africa. The increase of violence against women and children can never be justified in Islam. Shaykh Sadullah reminds us that Allah has indeed honored all human beings, and that any type of violence perpetrated against fellow human beings is a transgression of Allah's laws. To cause despair, anxiety and fear to fellow human beings is a reflection of our pathological internal states. It shows that we have lost our humanity and the way of the Prophet (peace be upon him). As Muslims, it behooves us to resist and stand up against oppression. If we remain silent to the suffering of others we become part of the problem. Change begins with us as individuals. There is no justification in Islam which advocates violence against women and children. For more SeekersGuidance podcast shows, visit seekersguidance.org/podcasts. 09-Adab: The Proprieties of Fridays- Ustadh Tabraze Azam
Out of His pure grace, Allah Most High has blessed the Muhammadan community (umma) with a day as special and sacred as Friday. The Noble Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, remarked that Allah has made it “an Eid for the believers.” (al-Muwatta) A day of joy, then, blessings and magnificent rewards from an all-Generous Lord, if only we took some moments to pause and reflect. It behooves us to recognize that Friday is not like any other day, but rather the chief (sayyid) of days, so we should endeavor to treat it differently. It is the day in which much good and righteous work, which may be otherwise lost or missed throughout the week, maybe made up and surpassed. It is the day in which the bounties of Allah will continue to reach us in the hereafter, the day in which our sins from the previous week are expiated for, and the day for which the scholars have listed over a hundred virtues. As the moments of our collective lives pass, we should strive to present ourselves before the sweet, graceful winds of Allah’s Mercy as they pass us weekly. And what better state than to greet them with complete gratitude (shukr) and full propriety, or adab, so that we can sow our humble seeds of sincere worship in hope of a momentous harvest in the next life. Adab 08: The Proprieties of Travel- Ustadh Tabraze Azam
True, meaningful journeying is found in spiritual wayfaring. In other words, the journey from sin and disobedience to righteous acts and Godfearingness, from heedlessness to presence, from distance to proximity, and from everything which Allah hates to everything Allah loves. This is the kind of journey that we will be deeply grateful for when we cast a backwards glance, to here, from the next life. This life is a time of planting the seeds, and the next is when we’ll harvest. Allah Most High says, “It will be as if they had stayed in the world no more than one evening or its morning.” Sura al- Nazi'at: 79:46 If things seem bleak for us, then let us be optimistic, as was the prophetic sunna, and make a change for the better today. In an instant, the turmoil and degradation of life in disobedience can be transformed, by His Grace, into something tremendous and everlasting. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, said, as part of a lengthier tradition (hadith), “One of you would observe the works of the people of the Hellfire until there is only a cubit between him and it, but then the register would forestall him and he would perform an act of the people of Paradise and consequently enter it.” (Bukhari) Whoever strives for Allah will find Him before him, and whoever traverses an upright, trodden, prophetic path will find great blessing, or baraka, in his life journey. Adab 07: The Proprieties of Earning a Living- Ustadh Tabraze Azam
Ustadh Tabraze Azam dives deep into the proprieties of earning a lawful income, its virtues, and its rewards in this life and in the life to come. The trustworthy, honest trader will be with the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs [on the Day of Judgement], said the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace. (Tirmidhi) When we live up to the ideals and deep, moral standards of the religion, we can be hopeful of something tremendous from Allah in the hereafter. After all, this life is merely a means to the next and not an end-goal in and of itself. Earning a livelihood is something that most of us can probably relate to, but our fast-paced lives, however, can sometimes hinder our ability to simply pause for a moment and review our trajectory into eternity. Seldom is a moment of contemplation void of any lasting benefit when it is for Allah. As we try to reconnect with our faith and live it more faithfully, with propriety, we should recall the words of Allah in which He informs us that He “made the day for livelihood.” (Sura al Naba’ 78:11) Thus, it is Allah’s favor upon us by which we are blessed with days in which we can fulfill the purpose of that time. A believer is a “son of his moment,” namely, somebody concerned with being in the right places at the right times, and doing what will be most pleasing to Allah therein. With gratitude, we can come to appreciate the most menial of tasks, and with gratitude, Allah increases us in ways we couldn’t otherwise imagine. Why Vote? The Muslims Concern for the Public Good? (and what if we’re disillusioned with politics)-Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
In this Khutba, Shaykh Faraz Rabbani discusses the approach Muslims should have when engaging with elections and issues of politics. All Muslims should focus on bringing about the benefit for their communities. It is vital that Muslims should have a concern about how they are governed and how various policies affect them and their communities. Shaykh Faraz reminds the congregation that by intending to bring about benefit and dispelling harm, they will fulfill an important obligation of bringing about good for themselves and fellow citizens. Additionally, the power of dua and an optimistic attitude should never be underestimated. Ultimately, Muslims should implore Allah to guide them in making the best decisions in their daily lives. Making fervent and sincere dua for others is a noble act that brings about blessings and well being. By having complete trust and reliance on Allah coupled with taking the means that Allah has created, Muslims will ensure that they are positive contributors to their societies For more SeekersGuidance podcast shows, visit seekersguidance.org/podcasts. 06- Adab: The Adab of The Mosque Part 2- Ustadh Tabraze Azam
Ustadh Tabraze Azam reminds is of the honor Allah has bestowed upon the mosque as a place of worship and the importance of right conduct in it. Proper manners take time to inculcate. But the more sacred the space or setting, the greater the emphasis is in maintaining a high bar. Each time we display something of a higher level of religion and thank Allah for it, He increases us out of His generosity. Each time we apply ourselves to a deeper level of excellence, it only shows Allah Most High that we truly care and that His religion is certainly something very dear to us. “And whoever honors the symbols of Allah, it is certainly out of the piety of the heart.” (Sura al Hajj 22:32) A heart stationed between regular gratitude for Allah’s blessings and a look to the eternal life is the kind of heart that is moved to work righteous deeds, even if only seemingly slight. Don’t Fear, Truly God Is With Us The Unconditional Hope- Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
One of the key sunnas of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is that he was always positive and full of hope in Allah Most High. It didn’t matter what was happening to him or around him, the Prophet’s positive attitude and hope were unconditional. In this Friday khutba, Shaykh Faraz Rabbani highlights Allah’s call to all believers to have unconditional hope. He explains how the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) maintained unconditional hope in Allah. Shaykh Faraz points out that most people are hopeful only when matters seem to go according to their plan or seem to be in their control. However, he explains that the reason behind the Messenger’s unconditional hope was the complete realization that ultimately all matters are absolutely in Allah’s control. Allah is the Lord who is absolutely Merciful, Caring and Cherishing. Shaykh Faraz encourages us to place our trust and hope in Allah and call upon Him while bringing to our consciousness those meanings. He calls us to not at all have fear or lose hope about how things are. Allah promises in the Qur’an that “whoever places their trust in Allah, then Allah is their sufficiency” [Surat al-Talaq, verse 3]. Therefore, to the extent one places their trust in Allah, to that extent He will be sufficient for them. Shaykh Faraz counsels us to have trust and hope in Allah by seeking the good from Him and then taking the means to attaining that good. Whether the matter is personal, communal or global, one should first direct themselves towards Allah and asking Him for the good. Finally, Shaykh Faraz highlights lessons from the hijra (migration) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as an example of true hope in Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) took the means outwardly to perform the migration. And all while there were multiple dangers on the way, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had absolute trust in Allah and reassured Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) with what was revealed to him from The Lord of the worlds, “fear not, for Allah is with us”. This Friday khutba was delivered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani in March 2017 at the Jame Masjid Oakville, Noor-ul-Haram. For more SeekersGuidance podcast shows, visit seekersguidance.org/podcasts. Re-Broadcast: Challenges and Choices: Lessons from the Great Day of Ashura
Shaykh Faraz Rabbani discusses the lessons of the great day of Ashura – the 10th of Muharram. This is one of the greatest days of the year – a day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) highly encouraged us to fast. This is the day in which… Prophet Adam was absolved of his error; the day in which Prophet Nuh was saved from the flood; the day in which the people of Prophet Yunus were forgiven; the day in which Prophet Musa and Bani Israel were saved from the Pharaoh It is from the days in which Allah has favoured and honoured those whom He has tested with trials and challenges – and who responded right through the right choices. Shaykh Faraz explains the sunnahs related to fasting and devotion on the 10th of Muharram, as well as how the great historical events that happened on this day can help us respond right to the challenges in our life. The importance of knowing the history of faith – the life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself, the past Prophets, the righteous, scholars, saints, and virtuous – is that it gives us embodied examples of turning to Allah through the tests of life, towards becoming of His honoured and beloved servants.
